The Rev. Fr. Michael Monos is blessed to be the current Proistamenos (Pastor) of Saint Luke the Evangelist Greek Orthodox Church under the omophorion of His Eminence Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago.
Fr. Michael was born in Los Angeles, California and attended St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Northridge, California during his formative years.
Fr. Michael received a B.A. in Religious Studies, summa cum laude, from California State University Northridge. Following undergraduate studies, Fr. Michael and his wife relocated to Madison, New Jersey, where he entered a doctoral program as a PhD candidate in the department of Theological Studies at Drew University with an emphasis on Patristics and dogmatic history. Fr. Michael studied under Dr. Thomas Oden and assisted him during the formation of the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture Project -a collection of Patristic commentary on the entire canon of Holy Scripture. During his studies, Fr. Michael studied Syriac at Notre Dame under Dr. Joseph Amar. Upon completion of his doctoral coursework, comprehensive examinations, and language examinations, Fr. Michael received a Masters of Philosophy (MPhil) with distinction. Because of his desire to serve the Church, Fr. Michael chose not to complete his dissertation or pursue an academic career.
During his doctoral studies, Fr. Michael felt a strong calling to the Holy Priesthood. After completing his coursework at Drew, he moved with his family to Boston to enroll in Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. During his time at Holy Cross, Fr. Michael had the privilege to work with the V. Rev. Fr George D. Dragas as his assistant. In that capacity, Fr. Michael traveled to Greece, Constantinople, Aman Jordan and the U.K. to attend various conferences and dialogues with Fr. George. After completing his coursework at Holy Cross, Fr. Michael received a Masters of Theological Studies (MTS) with High Distinction.
Fr. Michael was ordained to the Holy Diaconate on March 15, 1998 by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon of America (former) at Greenlawn, New York in the Church of St. Paraskevi. On the Feast of St. Nektarios the Wonderworker, November 9, 1998, Fr. MIchael was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon of American (former) in Clifton, New Jersey, at the parish of St. George. He was elevated to the rank of Pnevmatikos by His Eminence Metropolitan Maximos in 2001.
Since Fr. Michael’s ordination to the Holy Priesthood, he has served communities in Ohio, Florida, Georgia, Virginia and most recently in Columbia, Missouri.
Fr. Michael’s long standing interest in type design led him to start Newrome Press, a small publisher which designs liturgical texts and other books of interest to Orthodox Christians. Most siginifcantly, Fr. Michael had the honor of publishing Παρακαταθήκη Ἔργου – Legacy of Achievement: Metropolitan Methodios of Boston, Festal Volume on the 25th Anniversary of his Consecration to the Episcopate, 1982-2007 with Fr. George D. Dragas as Editor. Among the significant additions to Newrome Press' catalog are books by Hieromonk Gregorios, Elder of the Cell of St. John the Theologian, Koutloumousiou Monastery, Mt. Athos, including the recently translated Mystery of Marriage: A Fellowship of Love.
Fr. Michael is married to Presvytera Jeannie and has one son, Matthew.
